Top 10 Non-Disney Animated Movies

There are many good animated movies for children but sometimes they get lost in the shuffle when they tangle with a powerhouse like Disney. So to honor these sometimes underrated animated movies I chose to spotlight ten of these animated movies (non-disney) in my Top 10 list.

My Top 10 list of non-disney animated movies is in no particular order. I love and enjoy all of the chosen animated movies making it difficult to rank one above the other.

If you do not agree with some of my choices for best animated non-DIsney movies then take the opportunity to tell me so and debate me. Do not forget to leave any recommendations you may have for the Top 10 Non-Disney Animated Movies of all time below.

Disney Top 10 I Add Your Own Movie I Guestbook

Anastasia, a two dimensional animated movie, produced by Fox Animated Studios, explores the idea of what happened to the missing Russian Princess Anastasia. While the question is based on a historical mystery the story of Anya/ Anastasia is completely fabricated. Through Anya's story, the orphan with amnesia, we learn what becomes of Anastasia and why she never took her place in royal society. Check out the Anastasia promo.

Anastasia is one of my favorite animated movies because of well fleshed out characters, amazing music, and the perfect merge of character development and action sequences.

Should Anastasia make the Top 10 list?

Rio tells the story of Blu, stolen by smugglers at infancy, who ended up living in Minnesota with Linda. When a scientist comes calling Blu must make the journey back to Rio to mate with Jewel and save their species. When Blu and Jewel are taken by smugglers the domesticated Blu learns about freedom and what he has been missing living in Minnesota. Check out the Rio trailer.

I enjoyed watching Rio in part because of the music and in part because of the fun colourful cast of characters. Rio makes my Top Ten List of Non-Disney Animated movies because it is a fun and enjoyable family film that can be watched over and over again.

Should Rio make the Top 10 Animated Movies (Non-Disney)?

Shrek is the story of an ogre sent on a quest, with the aid of Donkey, to rescue Princess Fiona in order to get his swamp back. This story is somewhat similar to Beauty and the Beast except Shrek remains and ogre and the beautiful princesss, believed to be cursed, is transformed into an ogre (true love's form). Shrek is a beautiful movie worthy of inclusion in my Top 10 Non-DISney Animated Movies list because it reminds the viewer that we do not have to change who we are to suit someone else's label of us, that it is ok to be yourself, and that what's inside us that matters.

Since Shrek's debut in 2001, 3 other full length sequels have been spun, not to mention 2 Christmas and 1 Halloween special. The Shrek saga has also produced a spin-off movie entitled Puss in Boots set to debut in 2011.

Madagascar tells the story of four friends - Marty, the zebra; Gloria, the hippo; Alex, the lion and Melman, the giraffe - who end up in Madagascar after a zoo transfer from New York City goes wrong. Check out the Madagascar trailer.

Madagascar was included in my Top 10 Non-Disney Animated Movie list because the characters are fun and relateable. Great characters coupled with strong storylines (exploration of a new lifestyle and questions of identity) make Madagarascar worth including in any animated movie top 10 list.

I chose Hoodwinked to be in my Top 10 Non-Disney Animated Movies list because it retells the story of Red Riding Hood in a new and exciting way. While some of the characters may be familiar their stories differ from the version you probably heard. Check out the Hoodwinked trailer.

In this version of the tale you get to hear the story told from the perspective of Red, Granny, Wolf and the Woodcutter. If you expect the wolf to be the villain you are in for a delightful surprise.

The sequel to this film. Hoodwinked Too, is currently in theaters.

Over the Hedge tells the tale of a raccoon named RJ who cons a group of forest animal into helping him fulfill a debt he owes to a bear. He convinces these forest dwellers to steal food from the neighborhood that popped up while they were hibernating. In the end RJ learns a little about friendship and family. Check out the Over the Hedge promo.

I have included Over the Hedge among my Top 10 Movies list of non-disney animated movies because the animation is beautiful, it is funny and has a social message about human consumption.

The Chipmunk Adventures features the Chipmunks (Alvin, Simon and Theodore) and the Chipettes (Britney, Jeanette, and Elenore)in their first animated movie. The Chipmunks and Chipettes compete in a hot air balloon race to win $100, 000 and bragging rites. Unfortunely, the Chipmunks and Chipettes do not realize they are being used to smuggle diamonds around the globe. Check out the Chipmunk Adventure trailer.

The Chipmunk Adventure makes my Top 10 Non-Disney Animated Films because it is a fun family film that always makes me smile. Of course, I also adore the musical numbers; especially, the boys and girls of Rock N Roll.

The Swan Princess recounts the story of Odette and Derek brought together each summer by their respective parent in hopes that the two would one day wed, It seemed that the two would indeed wed and live happily ever after until Derek faltered when Odette asked him if beauty was all that mattered to him, William was killed, and Odette kidnapped and turned into a swan. Check out the Swan Princess trailer.

I love The Swan Princess and it makes my Top 10 Non-Disney Animated Movie list because of the music, the fact that Derek finds the words to tell Odette why he loved her (No, beauty is not all that matters), and the great supporting characters whom adds an element of fun to the movie.

All Dogs Go to Heaven tells the story of Charlie, a German Sheppard, who leaves heaven to seek revenge against Carface, the dog that killed him (Charlie does so against the advice of angels who warn than him that leaving heaven will result in him going to hell). With the help of itchy, Charlie's friend, and an orphan girl, Anne Marie who can talk to animals, Charlie plans his revenge.Check out the preview for All Dogs Go to Heaven.

I loved All Dogs Go to Heaven as a child. I found the bond between Anne Marie and Charlie touching. Charlie, loveable at times, is a dynamic memorable character. For those reasons listed above and many more I have given All Dogs Go to Heaven a place on the Top 10 animated movies (non-Disney).

Should All Dogs Go to Heaven make the Top 10 list?

Have you ever wondered what goes on inside the minds of chickens? Chicken Run addresses this question as the chickens try to escape the confines of their pens to find freedom, security and safety from the hard life of a farmed chickens. Check out the Chicken Run trailer.

Initially I was put off by the clay like animated chickens but I found the storyline compelling and was able to enjoy the movie. Chicken Run was an unexpected surprise. I did not expect to identify with a bunch of chickens but I did. For that reason, among others, Chicken Run makes my Top 10 List of animated movies (Non-Disney).
