Things to See in Rome: Roman Paintings, Roman Scuptures and Fountains in Rome

One of the amazing things to do in Rome, Italy is to check out the abundance of sculptures, paintings and fountains. If you have a list of paintings, or sculptures you would love to see in Rome make sure you map out where they are and how you will see them. Two places where you will find art in Rome are at the Vatican Museum and the Borghese Gallery. At these places you will find works from noteworthy artists; including Davinci, Michelangelo, Raphael, Caravaggio, Pomodoro among many others.

One of the things to do in Rome is to walk around and see some of the amazing fountains that exist within the city. They are works of art in their own rights. From Trevi to the Turtle fountain you will be inspired at every turn.

Find my favorite art pieces from the street to the Gallery, with links to learn more and suggestions, to help transform you visit to Rome Italy into an unforgettable vacation.

Things to do in Rome Italy: Galleria Borghese - Private collection of art in Rome for public view by appointment only

Important Galleria Borghese Information

1. Your bag, purse, camera, video camera, and umbrella must be handed over to the cloak room attendants before you are admitted in the gallery.

2. You cannot smoke in the Galleria.

3. You many not eat anything in the Galleria Borghese

6. No photography of any kind is allowed.

7. You must have reservations to visit the Gallery

The Galleria Borghese, one of the great things to see in Rome, will give you their own guided tour if you like or you can rent headphones to tell you about each individual piece. I, however, booked a tour with an external tour company using Expedia. They dealt with making the reservations. It worked well for me, but a couple from France booking through the same service only spoke French ended up on our tour with a tour guide who only spoke Italian and English. They ended up having to rent the headphones anyway. I recommend before you book with anyone you check out all the details. If you are not sure about something, like the language of the tour guide, make inquiries before you book. It will ensure your things to do in Rome list will not hit any road bumps.

Things to do in Rome at the Gallery Borghese

I would have loved to see this piece at Borghese Galleria, as it was one of things to see in Rome, but when I was there it was on loan to another gallery. Tip: If you want to see a specific piece of art on your visit to Rome make sure it is currently featured at its home gallery and not abroad.

Things to See in Rome: The Vatican and St. Peter's Basillica - Rome attractions filled with sculptures and more

The first place I visited in Vatican City was the Vatican Museum which is one of the many things to see and do in Rome. I was approached to take a tour of the Museum and San Pietro's when I was standing in a huge line waiting to gain entrance to St. Peter's by a blonde British woman who had spend too many hours outside in the hot Roman Sun. She then passed us on to our Tour Guide who was extremely knowledgeable of all exhibits with in the Vatican. When I saw Laocoon across the court yard where we were looking at another piece I could hardly resist heading over to see the statue I had studied in art history. A picture of a piece of sculpture, I quickly discovered in Rome, does not showcase the majesty of a piece of well sculpted marble.

My only regret about the tour was that the tour guide neglected to take us into the Raphael Rooms at the Vatican Museum, which was a key place that I hoped to visit. I was highly scheduled on my trip to Rome so I did not get another change to get back to the museum. On the bright side, it is one of many reasons to go back to Rome.

Some of the featured items I did see were the Sistine Chapel, Sphere within a Sphere, Laocoon and Perseus with Medusa.

Dress Code Information for St. Peter's Bascillica

1. You will not be allowed entrance if your shoulders are not covered.

2. If you wear a skirt it must be below the knees.

3. Men and Women will not be allowed in if they are wearing shorts.

Though it is not listed in the rules, hats should be removed before entering as a sign of respect, you should obey the signs telling you where you cannot take pictures, remember St. Peter's is a church and you many come across praying visitors.

My favorite piece at St. Peter's was seeing Michelangelo's Pieta, the only piece he ever signed much to his regret. Sadly and fortunately, it is protected by glass so you have to view this piece at a distance. The details are very inspiring as are all Michelangelo's works. Please note the pictures below are mine with the exception of the fresco from the Sistine Chapel and the picture of Michelangelo's Pieta which both come from the web gallery of art.

What do you think about Sphere within a Sphere? - Does it belong in the Vatican Museum?

Some people have nicknamed Pomodoro's work the Rotten Tomato and feel this futuristic art does not reflect the tone of the other pieces within the Vatican Museum. So what do you think about the Sphere within a Sphere? Does it belong in the Vatican.

Is it beautiful?

Art Out and About in Rome

Outside Art in Rome

One of the great things about Rome is the art is everywhere. It can be seen in fountains, buildings, statues and reminders of the past. The fountains are spectatcular in Rome. I have included pictures of a couple of my favorites within Rome. Some I discovered on foot and others when I was taking a Segway tour of Rome which was tailored to where and when we wanted to stop. I loved the tour as much for all the great places and things that I saw but I loved riding the Segway. If the price was not so steep I would have come home with one. I even raced in Circus Maximus on my rented Segway. Riding around Rome on a Segway is one of the things to do in Rome.
