My Purple Bedroom Makeover
Purple Bedroom Decorating Ideas
We are playing musical rooms at my home so I inherited a hot pink Disney inspired room and it is my goal to transform it into adult purple bedroom. As you can tell from the hot pink walls we tend to like bold colors in our family. One of the major undertakings of my purple bedroom makeover will be priming and painting a new color on the walls. I expect several coats of paint will be necessary to get rid of the before color.
How will I create my purple bedroom? There are two ways I am thinking about going. One dramatic purple walls with colorful accents or grey walls with bold purple accents. This will be decided when I visit the local hardware store and examine the paint chips as my color choices will be limited by buying a low odor paint (not a huge selection at my local hardware store)
I am recording my purple bedroom makeover journey at each stage of the renovations so you will see my thought process and steps I take as I re-imagine this small space.

Purple Bedroom Makeover: The Before Pictures
The room I am starting My Purple Bedroom Makeover has bright bold pink walls. It is very vibrant like the young occupant it housed. It is filled with posters, wall decals and touches of Disney everywhere.
My goal is to create a restful and peaceful room.
Prepping the Walls
It is time to survey you walls to see what previous damage has been done to them. You need to fill old holes and sand around any jagged edges. Note: Any paint that has been placed on the wrong surface. In my case the previous painter got paint on the ceiling so a repaint of the ceiling will be a must.
Before you paint remove any baseboards. Light switches and plug ins can be protected by painter's tape. You will need to mark off any areas you do not want to paint with painters tape before you start.
Especially with bright and dark colors you will want to make sure you use a primer. Priming a wall will enable you to use less coats a paint.

Painting and More Painting
I painted three colors in my room. The purple on my walls is a Behr premium paint entitled Ash Vilolet. The next color I chose was a yellow for the ceiling. You should have seen the ladies face at home depot when I told her I was painting the ceiling a golden yellow. It was mixture of amusement and shock. She recommended basic white. I went with the yellow. I cannot abide staring.at boring white whether it is on the walls or the ceiling. To give the baseboards an new look I went two shades lighter than the ceiling color. You have to see it up against something white to see the color difference. In my room it looks like an off white color.
My painting woes were many on this project; including, stepping into a filled painting tray, removing painting tape to discover a thin line of pink running between the yellow ceiling and Ash Viloet walls, and the ever present touching the wall with trim paint.
I was thrilled to finish; though, my lines between the purple and yellow are not that straight. I will leave those touch ups for another day. Perhaps, I will purchase crown molding so the squiggly lines will not be an issue. Another project, another day.

How to Paint a Straight Line
So I should have looked this up earlier. This video, I found on youtube, teaches you how to properly do an interior cut in. I should have used an angled brush and went back over the brush strokes with the small roller. Somehow, I do not think my lines would be as straight as the man's strokes were in the video I am sharing this video in hopes you will not have the same painting woes with your ceiling line as I did with mine.
Combining Form and Function
In my purple bedroom I am going to need somewhere to sleep, a place to work on my computer and crafts, and a dresser for clothing storage as the closet is not available. I converted by old vanity into a desk area (this project is ongoing as I still need to fill holes and repaint it when the warmer weather hits). I removed a ledge and drawer to make room for the netbook and added some personal decorations I owned including my Frog Prince ornament.
Above the desk I hung a few clipboards I decoupaged with contact paper from the dollar store. Check out my article on how to decorate a home office on a budget for tips on how to create you own. I will be using mine to hold photographs and various notes.
I previously used a closet to hang all my clothes so converting to a dresser is going to be a challenge. I am a visual person so I usually need to see something in front of my face to know if I am going to wear it. Because of this I did not have a dresser so I am using a dresser that is been in our family almost as long as I have been alive. It used to have legs but they disappeared over 10 years ago. I am not really partial to the color so I may eventually update with some paint and new nobs.

A room like the person it represents is a continual work in progress. It is never static, it is always changing.
Upcoming Bedroom Projects
I have a couple of major project I still want to undertake in my bedroom to give it a more bright look but I am looking to complete them a few months down the line. I want to spray paint, so it will be better to do this when the weather is a little warmers as winter is still keeping a foothold where I live. After all, it is important to spray paint in a well ventilated area. I found this out the hard way when I didn't follow the directions when I was a teen and did a spray paint project in the house.
I am listing the projects I have left to complete in part as an incentive to finish and part as a way to catalogue my to do list. I will show you the results on another page when I complete the projects.
Project One: Dresser Overhaul
My dresser is old and the facing chipped. There is even evidence of a transformer sticker I put on it when I was in grade school. So there is tons of sanding that needs to be done. The dresser needs to be primed, painted and sealed. It has lost its legs so it is just sitting on the ground. I will need to find some replacements in a suitable style. I will also want to change out the old handles for something a little more modern.
Project Two: Complete Desk Overhaul
I started to transform my old Queen Anne Vanity into a suitable desk area. I removed the mirror, a ledge and a drawer. I still need to fill the left over holes with wood putty. Sand the vanity down and repaint or decoupage it. I still have not decided about which course I will take.

Purple Room Challenge
My room has poor lighting. There is just one light fixture that sits in the center of the room. I have one huge window that lets in tons of light. The only problem is that my room faces the front of the house and looks onto the front street. I don't know about you but I do not relish getting undressed for the whole neighborhood to see. So I will need to hang curtains.
I currently am using are my green/ brown light blocking curtains because I get the occasional migrane and the light can become to hard to take. That does not leave room for brightenting the purple walls. I am looking for white curtains to make the room appear at little more fresh. The challenge is finding one that does not let of light in.
Beige Blackout Curtains
I thought White blackout curtains might have been an oxymoron; but I did find some interesting results when I searched amazon for the term. The closet match I could find to what I wanted was Beige Thermal Insulated Blackout curtains. These curtains look almost white so they could be a possibility for new room curtains.
A Question About Curtains
Should I change my curtains to something a little brighter like the above beige blackout curtains? Perhaps I should choose an entirely different color. Share your opinions
Do you like the beige curtains?
What About Window Films?
I thought I decided on getting curtains until I came across a selection of adorable window films at Home Depot. I had no idea they came in so many cute designs. They even had stained glass film but I thought that might be make my room look too much like a church. Now I'm wavering about what kind or window treatment to be.
I like the idea of window film because it allows you to showcase the window architecture. The only problem I see is the light coming through when I have a head ache. Of course, I could always hang up the blackout curtains on the days I need total darkness.
Window Film Versus Curtains
I am about 50/50 on whether I want to try to use a window film or curtains. If this was your room which would you choose.
Curtains or Window Film?
Dressing the Walls
As much as I would like to stare at Ash Violet Walls all day and night I need to give my space a little more personality. I need to dress the walls. This can be done with art, shelves and much more.
Above my bed I placed a large green Venetian Mash I purchase in Venice. It has huge feathers sticking out the crown of the mask. It is a real dust collector but I love it. After all, that mask traveled via boat, planes and cars to get home to Canada.
For my other wall I wanted something that would cover a huge surface but I did not want to spend a lot. So I converted a dollar storeroom divider into art on my wall. I think it turned out nicely.
My other walls are adorned with photos, clipboards and shelves.

Dresser Top Display
I used my dresser top to display some of the things I love. If you have read a few of my articles you might recognize a few items I have talked about.
On my dresser I have a cup holder to hang some ornaments and necklaces. I have a picture of my grandparents in Hawaii, a few dolls, a snow globe and a music box.
The two dolls are handpicked from my Monster High collection. I am displaying Skelita Calaveras and Spectra Vondergeist. Spectra because she is the doll that drew me into collecting dolls and Skelita because I really love her Candy Skull make-up.
I have written about both these dolls on Squidoo so if you are interested in learning more about these Monster High ghouls you may want to check out these pages:
Skelita Calaveras
What is not to love about Skelita Calaveras with her sugar skull face and realistic skeleton torso? This Day of the Dead doll showcases Mexican heritage.
On my cup holder you will find a Frog Prince Ornament and my Maleficent Mickey Mousse Ear Ornament. Curious about these items. Follow the links below to learn more.
Anastasia Movie
Anastasia, the animated movie produced by Fox, tells the story of an orphan girl name Anya as she journeys from St. Petersburg to Paris in order to find out who she is and where she came from.
Displaying a collection or a few chose pieces you love on a dresser or mantel is a great way to bring your personality into your room.

Adding Purple Accents Back Into the Room
While the walls are purple I would like to add some purple accents into the room as well. The trick is not overly populating the room with purple treasures. To avoid this I will be using other colors to accent the room.
I will be adding blue and grey into the room as well. I am pulling these colors from the flower comforter I am currently using. I am doing this in an effort to create more visual interest. I will add a purple throw and purple glass stones into the Symmetry Trio I purchased from Partylite. Can you find any other purple accents placed in the room.
